Continental's CrewSolver re-paired crews globally after disruptions

After storms and 9/11, Continental reassigned crews network-wide in minutes, saving about $40m in 2001.

the move

Airlines face disruptions every day — weather, mechanical trouble, crew unavailability — and after one, crews are often not where they need to be to fly their remaining legs, causing delays and cancellations.

CALEB Technologies built CrewSolver, a decision-support system that uses operations research to generate globally optimal or near-optimal crew-recovery solutions for Continental, reassigning crews to open flights and steering them back to the original schedule while satisfying every regulation and contract.

The system handled the December 2000 and March 2001 Nor'easter snowstorms, the June 2001 Houston flood and 9/11, and Continental estimated it saved roughly $40 million in 2001 for major disruptions alone.
