Calvé revived 75 years of peanut-butter ads to beat private label
Instead of new product claims, Calvé reshowed its most loved commercials; nostalgia turned years of volume decline back into growth.
Calvé Pindakaas (Unilever)
The solution
Calvé is the Dutch peanut-butter market leader with about 50% value share, but private label had grown to roughly 40% and the price gap was widening during a recession. Even an award-winning 2022 Esther Vergeer commercial could not stop volume from falling.
Agency alfred chose memory over claims: for Calvé's 75th birthday, the campaign re-edited the most iconic scenes from its advertising history — Evert, Pietertje, Lieke — under 'You never walk alone', turning the brand's own archive into the pitch. Media ran around big sports moments, kicking off in the half-time of the Champions League semi-final.
The nostalgia play worked: Calvé reversed years of volume decline, slowed private label's advance and grew the entire peanut-butter category while holding a premium price — the case that earned the bronze Effie NL 2024 in the Merk category.
Why it worked
- Everyone already loved the old ads; the campaign just re-opened them
- Nostalgia justifies a premium price better than a feature claim
- The anniversary gave a natural reason to look back
- Sports timing put the warm feeling where families were watching
What can be applied
When price competition attacks a beloved brand, spend the brand's own history: re-activate stored affection instead of inventing new reasons, and price defense stops being a features debate.
Aftermath
The campaign ran from 17 April 2023 to 14 April 2024 and is archived in SAN's 2023 case collection; the bronze Effie NL 2024 recognized the reversal of volume decline and private-label pressure.
