Duke of Bridgewater's 1761 canal halved Manchester's coal price and sparked the canal age

In the 1750s, coal from the Duke of Bridgewater's mines at Worsley had to reach Manchester by packhorse and cart over bad roads, making it so expensive that most of the growing industrial town could barely afford it. The bottleneck was transport, not the coal.
Francis Egerton, the Duke, chose a bold private fix: a canal. Engineer James Brindley built the Bridgewater Canal — Britain's first entirely artificial waterway — running about 10 miles from Worsley to Manchester, crossing the Irwell valley on an aqueduct with no locks.
When the canal opened in the early 1760s, the cost of coal in Manchester was more than halved almost overnight. Cheap fuel changed what was possible, and the Duke alone financed the project, unusual for someone of his position.
The canal was later extended to Liverpool, and its example — a privately funded water road paying for itself through cheaper freight — launched Britain's canal age, with merchants, coalmine owners and bankers building navigations across the country.
