London fare capping means no rider guesses wrong and overpays
TfL charges the cheapest of every single trip or an automatic daily/weekly cap, so frequent riders never overpay and never buy a ticket.

the move
London's fares used to force a choice: a single journey, a Day Travelcard, or a season. Choose wrong — buy a single when you will need a Travelcard, or buy a Travelcard on a light day — and you paid more than you had to. For commuters the decision was repeated daily.
Fare capping removed the choice. Every tap on the same card into one of TfL's modes is recorded, and the fares are added up. TfL then charges the lower of the sum and the applicable cap.
The daily cap is calculated over a 24-hour window from 04:30, and the weekly cap runs Monday to Sunday. The cap levels are set to match the equivalent Day or 7-Day Travelcard, so frequent riders pay no more than the season they would have bought.
The design means a rider who takes the fourth journey of the day can effectively ride free, and contactless made the same convenience available without buying anything in advance — the card already in a wallet is the ticket.

Fare capping became the default for millions of London journeys and spread across UK operators, extending to a weekly cap for those who travel all week. It dovetailed with contactless, which let riders tap the same bank card and be charged the capped fare with no purchase step at all.
