ASICS put a legally-binding movement break into employment contracts
ASICS created the 'Desk Break Clause', a contract right to a 15-minute movement break, and measured it: stress down 14.7%, productivity up 33.2%.

the move
As workers returned to offices, ASICS identified the desk itself as a risk to mental health. Evidence showed mental state starts to decline after two sedentary hours, so a 'move more' ad campaign would contradict the world people actually sit in.
Golin and ASICS turned the diagnosis into a contract clause: 'The Desk Break Clause', the first employment clause for movement, guaranteeing workers a paid 15-minute break each day beyond standard breaks. It was written into ASICS UK contracts and published for any employer to adopt. A campaign fronted by Brian Cox — the 'scariest boss' on television — made it a cultural event.
The evidence was the product: participants' State of Mind scores rose 22.5%, stress fell 14.7%, productivity increased 33.2% and focus improved 28.6%. The campaign generated about 2.3 billion earned-media reach, over 50 million PSA views and more than 1.2 million Desk Breaks taken.
why it works
- A clause changes what's normal, so the behaviour survives without constant reminders.
- Making it free and license-free let rivals adopt it, spreading ASICS's position industry-wide.
- The measurement turned a well-being claim into evidence, which got the idea taken seriously.
- A famous intimidating boss selling a broken-down-to-a-break ask made it land in culture, not just in HR.
what transfers
To change a behaviour, change the structure that shapes it. A tip asks someone to choose differently; a clause makes it the default they're entitled to — and free to copy, so it spreads.
what came after
The Desk Break Clause became a B2B benchmark: it won a Cannes Lions Silver in Creative B2B (2025), Gold and Silver at the Drum Awards, and PR Week recognition, and it seeded a real 'desk break' policy inside agencies — showing a brand can advance its purpose by handing away the instrument that does the work.
