Gross Insurance turned Uzum's shopping bags into reflective safety gear

An insurer and a marketplace replaced their delivery bags with reflective ones, making pedestrians visible at night and reversing the insurer's losses.

GROSS Insurance · Uzum Market

the move

At night in Uzbekistan, pedestrians crossing the road are nearly invisible to drivers, and the resulting accidents were driving claims and losses for insurer GROSS.

Rather than spend on a public-awareness campaign, GROSS partnered with e-commerce giant Uzum Market, which already put a bag in every delivery, and replaced its standard carrier with a reflective, reusable bag bearing the pedestrian-crossing symbol.

The bag was delivered automatically with online orders, so the safety fix reached people at scale — about 10,000 bags in the first month — with roughly the same cost as a normal bag and no extra delivery spend.

In effect, every shopper became a walking crossing sign, making pedestrians visible to drivers at the exact moment they were most at risk.

why it works

  • It used an object that already reached the target audience, so the fix cost almost nothing to distribute.
  • Preventing accidents addressed the loss at its source rather than treating the symptom.
  • The reflective bag was both a functioning product and a constant public reminder.
  • It aligned a social good (saving lives) with the insurer's own bottom line.

what transfers

When a risk is caused by an everyday object you already ship, change that object rather than run an ad. Fix the exposure with the vehicle you control, and the business outcome follows.

what came after

The campaign reached an estimated 18.3 million people, nearly half of Uzbekistan, with zero media spend. GROSS Insurance, previously losing money on night claims, recorded an 8% rise in profit. Local authorities scaled the initiative nationwide and brought the bags into schools, and the case won festival awards including gold at KIAF and a sweep at White Square.
