AirAsia's Kancil entry framed a trap familiar to every low-cost carrier: to fill seats in a brutally competitive market it kept cutting fares, and the discounting itself was bleeding the brand and its revenue. The occasion was the Visit Asean@50 campaign, and it exposed a second problem — Asean destinations simply had low appeal for Malaysians, who preferred 'premium' trips to Hong Kong, Japan and Australia.

The answer was 'Adventure Live', an immersive travel series broadcast live from six Asean destinations on AirAsia's Facebook page. The travelogues were completely live and unedited; audiences interacted and voted on the adventures the hosts experienced, so nobody — including AirAsia — knew exactly what would happen next. The unpredictability was the product: an authentic, unpolished look at places Malaysians had written off.

Per the entry, seats sold rose 27 percent during the campaign period, a 14 percent increase over the same period the year before, and the average fare increased year on year rather than falling. The work won a Merit at the 2018 Kancil Awards in the Innovation in Digital Experience category.

Sell the destination live; stop discounting it

Live and unedited was the differentiator: in a feed of produced destination ads, the risk of something unplanned reads as proof the place is real.

Voting converts attention into investment. Viewers who decided what the hosts did next have a stake in how the trip turns out.

It attacked the actual bottleneck — destination appeal — not the symptom of empty seats, so the recovery did not depend on deeper discounts.

When a category's default tactic — discounting — is itself the disease, change what is being sold, not the price it is sold at. Make the destination worth wanting and the fare takes care of itself.

The entry records the campaign-window numbers and the Kancil Merit; it does not state whether the series ran again. The strategic point outlasted the campaign: in a market where every competitor can match a fare cut, the durable differentiator is wanting the destination in the first place — and Asean content, not price, is what the campaign could actually own.
