The solution
Through 2020 and 2021 the Klang Valley, Malaysia's most populous region, kept losing its taps to odour pollution in the rivers feeding its treatment plants. On 31 August 2021 the Sungai Semenyih plant shut down after pollution was detected at the Jenderam Hilir pump station, leaving 463 locations dry; Air Selangor deployed 94 water tanker trucks while residents queued with buckets. The state government's only offered solution was those trucks.
For Malaysia Airlines — an airline still grounded down to domestic traffic by pandemic restrictions — Mediabrands Content Studio saw the crisis as inventory. The execution, credited in the Kancil record simply as 'MAS Water Crisis', told Malaysians there was 'another simple solution': travel to the non-affected states, with MAS flying them there. The copy never mentioned the airline's troubles; it borrowed the week's biggest domestic complaint and answered it with a route map.
The work is a textbook tactical newsjack: the crisis supplied the audience's full attention, the government's inadequate fix supplied the setup, and the airline's product supplied the punchline. Kancil's 2022 jury gave the single execution a Merit in English Copywriting, in an agency haul that same year included a Bronze for KFC Malaysia's #KepciKitchen.
What it achieved
When the state sends trucks, sell plane tickets
Why it worked
The campaign rode an event every affected household was already talking about, so the ad needed no media spend to be found relevant
Reframing a shortage as a destination story converts national griping into purchase intent instead of sympathy
The product genuinely solves the stated problem — distance — which no competitor without flights could copy
A single copy execution matched the speed a newsjack requires; no film production could have shipped inside the news cycle
What can be applied
Newsjacking lands when your product is the actual antidote: name the official fix, then offer a better one only you can deliver. A rival can copy the joke, not the route network behind it.
Aftermath
Water crises kept returning to the Klang Valley, and Malaysia Airlines kept rebuilding domestic demand through late 2021 as travel bubbles reopened. The execution itself took a Merit at the Kancil Awards 2022 for Mediabrands Content Studio, whose KFC Malaysia work '#KepciKitchen' won Bronze in the same cycle. The episode stands as a Malaysian example of the airline-newsjack tradition — a one-day idea that only works if you actually have the planes.
