Shark fin soup is not just a dish in Chinese-Malaysian culture; it is the default centerpiece of the wedding banquet, which makes refusing it socially expensive exactly when a young couple is most status-conscious. WWF-Malaysia's brief, as recorded in its Kancil entry, was to create awareness among a new generation of Chinese Malaysians at marrying age and reduce the consumption of shark fin soup at its most defended occasion.

The solution, 'Wedding Without Fins', recruited the hosts instead of confronting them. Couples were given the opportunity to turn their wedding backdrops into anti-finning messages — turning the very event with which shark fin soup had become synonymous into a medium for the cause. Every guest at the banquet faces the backdrop through the ceremony and dinner, so the message sits in the room where the soup is served, voiced by the two people whose hospitality defines the occasion.

The entry won a Merit at the 2018 Kancil Awards in the Kancil for Good: Promo & Activation category. It extended WWF-Malaysia's wider anti-shark-fin push, which had already moved to restaurant menus and consumer pledges nationwide.

Make the wedding itself argue against the fin

The medium is the offense's home ground: the backdrop is the one screen every banquet guest faces for hours, and it frames the meal instead of interrupting it.

The messenger changes the register. A couple's wedding statement reads as values and hospitality, not as an activist's demand, so guests discuss rather than resist.

It propagates through life events. Every participating wedding models the refusal for exactly the cohort of friends and relatives who will host the next banquet.

Put the counter-message inside the ritual that produces the behavior. The backdrop doesn't confront the banquet; it reframes the hosts' hospitality, and the couple's standing carries it to every seat.

WWF-Malaysia kept shark fin on the national agenda. By 2016 its My FIN My Life campaign was seeking backing from at least a million Malaysians for a no-shark-fin-soup call and working to sensitise 20,000 restaurants toward phasing the dish out of their menus. Wedding Without Fins carried that fight into the dish's stronghold — the celebration where a refusal feels like an insult to the host — and the problem the campaign named persists wherever banquet tradition outlives the stocks it consumes.
