WeChat's 2014 red packets turned a CNY ritual into payments' viral unlock
Tencent digitised the Chinese new-year hongbao in 2014: give money to a group, let the app split it — 8M users in days, and WeChat Pay got its bank-card army

那一手
By 2014 WeChat had hundreds of millions of users but almost no payment behavior — its wallet was a feature nobody opened. The Chinese New Year gave Tencent its wedge: the hongbao, a cash gift in a red envelope that every family exchanges. Tencent's product team (from November 2013 brainstorming) built it into the chat: a red-envelope button that lets you send money from a bank card — forcing the card-bind that payments needed — and receive it in a group, with the amount split randomly among grabbers.
The first festival, January-February 2014, was decisive: between New Year's Eve and the eighth day, more than 8 million users took part and over 40 million red packets were claimed — peak one-minute volume of 25,000 — averaging under 10 yuan each. The game mechanics (random splits, 'who got the biggest') made the simplest transaction feel like entertainment, and every packet bound a card to WeChat Pay.
The payoff compounded at scale: the 2015 CCTV Spring Festival Gala partnership produced 11 billion 'shake' interactions in one night, at a peak of 810 million shakes per minute; Tencent reported more than 1 billion red packets sent in 2015, and 2.3 billion on a single day in January 2016. Against the incumbent's fortress, WeChat Pay's installed card-base had crossed the chasm in one holiday.
为什么管用
- A cultural ritual is distribution: no ad could teach China to pay through chat, but the red envelope already did — Tencent automated it and collected the card-bind as the price of play.
- Game mechanics made gifting sticky: random group splits turned generosity into a lottery people replay, multiplying messages per packet far beyond what sending cash to one person could generate.
- The annual cycle compounds: each New Year reproduces the ritual and re-binds dormant users — a self-repeating acquisition engine that a marketing campaign cannot copy once.
可以搬走什么
Find the behaviour your market loves and hide the payment inside it: the ritual adopts, the mechanics spread, and the card-bind rides along — payment follows culture, not features
后来呢
WeChat Pay went on to rival Alipay as one of China's two dominant mobile-payment systems, with red packets an annual fixture; the 2014 launch is now standard case material on viral product-led adoption.
