Alternating current won the power war because transformers let electricity travel.

Tesla's polyphase AC could be stepped up by a transformer to cross distances, so power outgrew Edison's DC and AC became the standard.

那一手

In the late 1880s Thomas Edison's direct current was the standard in the United States, but DC ran at one low voltage and could not be transported far without enormous, costly copper. That physical ceiling limited each generator to a small surrounding area.

Nikola Tesla patented a complete polyphase alternating-current system, and George Westinghouse licensed it. Because AC could be stepped up by a transformer, sent over a thin wire at high voltage, then stepped down at the far end, it made long-distance power feasible.

Edison campaigned against AC as dangerous, but the economics won. At the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, Westinghouse outbid General Electric's $554,000 DC proposal with a $399,000 AC one, and by 1896 the Niagara Falls plant was lighting Buffalo with AC. DC all but disappeared as a distribution standard.

为什么管用

  • Transformers let AC change voltage cheaply, which removed the distance limit that capped DC.
  • High-voltage AC over thin wire used far less copper than low-voltage DC, cutting cost dramatically.
  • The Chicago World's Fair and the Niagara Falls plant proved AC at scale, so buyers switched.
  • Generators and motors built around AC created an ecosystem that made more AC equipment affordable.

可以搬走什么

When a technology is bounded by physics, the design that removes the bottleneck wins - and the winning design is the one that changes the constraint, not the one that optimises within it.

后来呢

Alternating current became the way electricity is generated and distributed worldwide, with DC surviving mainly inside devices. The transformer, not the generator, was the component that let a single plant serve cities across a region and made the standard stick.
