Jim Jackson standardised air-cargo containers, and the LD3 turned bulk into unit loads.
Every airline loaded cargo its own way; Jackson led SAE, IATA and ISO to standardise Unit Load Devices, so freight moves as a box, not loose bulk.

那一手
Through the 1960s airlines were transitioning from propeller aircraft to jets and then to wide-bodies, and each airline handled cargo its own way. Loading the belly of a plane meant moving loose freight by hand, making turnaround slow and space hard to use.
Jim Jackson, who spent 40 years at American Airlines, chaired the SAE Air Cargo Committee, the IATA ULD Board, and the ISO air-cargo technical sub-committee, and led the creation of baseline technical standards for Unit Load Devices and the aircraft and ground equipment that move them.
The result was a family of standard containers and pallets matched to the aircraft hold, the most famous being the LD3. Because it fitted any wide-body, an LD3 could be packed on the ground, loaded in minutes and swapped between flights and airlines.
The LD3 and its relatives became a great enabler of the air-cargo industry, letting it move past the bulk-cargo era. Standardisation meant the industry could plan capacity, price it and grow it around a common unit instead of around each airline's quirks.
为什么管用
- A standard box preloaded on the ground turns an aircraft hold into a fast, predictable handling operation.
- Interchangeable ULDs let airlines swap capacity, so empty or overloaded space is used by someone else.
- Putting a common shape around freight makes space planning and pricing possible across the industry.
可以搬走什么
When the asset is expensive and its use is fragmented, a common standard for the unit of work creates a market the fragmented pieces could not.
后来呢
The ULD became the standard for air freight and baggage, with the LD3 the workhorse of wide-body belly cargo. Jackson's standards were recognised with the SAE Franklin W. Kolk Air Transportation Progress Award and a place in the TIACA Hall of Fame. The idea that a common container standard can unlock an industry, in airline cargo the same way the shipping container did at sea, underpins global air freight today.
