The reefer container put a fridge inside a box, moving chilled goods door to door.
Instead of refrigerating a whole ship, a self-contained cooling unit sits inside a standard container that plugs into power on ship, truck and rail.

那一手
Cold cargo had to move on special refrigerated ships with refrigerated holds, which was only as good as the vessel. Goods cooled at sea had to be transferred quickly and carefully, and the cold chain broke whenever freight changed hands.
The refrigerated container makes the cold portable. A cooling machine and its controls are built into the end of a standard 20- or 40-foot box, so the box is its own temperature-controlled hold. On board it plugs into the ship's power; inland it plugs into a reefer point or carries a generator.
Because the container is a standard unit, the same box moves from a factory in one country to a shop in another, riding a ship, a rail wagon and a truck without the cargo ever being re-chilled. By the 1970s these containers were designed specifically for container carriers.
Daikin built its first reefer unit in 1968 and shipped it from Tokyo to Los Angeles, becoming a leader in container refrigeration. The plug-in box turned temperature-sensitive goods into ordinary containerised freight.
为什么管用
- A plug-in box uses whatever power is at hand, ship, port or inland.
- The same container travels by ship, rail and truck, so the cold chain is unbroken.
- Standard box dimensions fit existing handling, so temperature control adds no friction.
- Self-contained units replace a shipwide refrigeration plant with a per-box machine.
可以搬走什么
When a service has to be continuous, put the critical capability inside the unit that travels, so it works on every mode rather than only at the hub.
后来呢
Refrigerated containers became the default way to move perishables, largely replacing purpose-built reefer ships: Daikin alone has supplied over 250,000 units. New cargoes cut flowers, pharmaceuticals and wine moved to sea freight that had once needed air freight, and the plug-in system became the backbone of the modern cold chain.
