Novo's 1985 NovoPen made insulin injection portable, precise and discreet
Before NovoPen, insulin meant vials and syringes; the pen put a cartridge and dialed dose in a pocket-size device, improving accuracy and adherence.
Novo Nordisk
那一手
For decades insulin meant drawing a dose from a vial with a syringe: awkward in public, easy to mis-dose, and a real barrier to the multiple daily injections that tight glucose control needs.
Novo Nordisk launched the first commercially available insulin pen, NovoPen, in 1985 — a cartridge-based, dial-a-dose injector about the size of a fountain pen. The design made injection faster, more discreet and more accurate than drawing up a dose.
Reviews of insulin delivery devices record the advantages of pens over syringes: greater accuracy, ease of use, satisfaction, quality of life and adherence, with U.S. claims data suggesting the adherence improvement can lower diabetes-care costs.
为什么管用
- Dialed dosing is more accurate than drawing from a vial.
- Portability and discretion make injections socially and practically easier.
- Better adherence improves outcomes and reduces system cost.
- The cartridge creates recurring revenue and brand lock-in.
可以搬走什么
Improve the ritual, not just the molecule: the same drug delivered through a better object changes behavior, and behavior is where clinical outcomes and revenue are made.
后来呢
Pens evolved from reusable devices to prefilled disposables and then smart pens with dose logging (NovoPen 6); pen use became standard in Europe and kept growing in the U.S. as the category matured.
