Ignitia rebuilt tropical forecasting and sells farmers rain forecasts for 4 cents a day

Global models are worst exactly where farmers depend on rain; Ignitia's mesoscale model delivers 48-hour SMS forecasts at $0.04 a day.

Ignitia

那一手

Ignitia targets low-income farmers in the tropics — West Africa and Brazil — who depend on rain-fed agriculture and whose forecasts were routinely inaccurate because global weather models are calibrated for mid-latitude conditions with dense weather-station data.

The company modeled physics suited to mesoscale tropical weather, with new parameterization schemes, ensemble methodology and different data assimilation and initialization techniques, then supplies rainfall forecasts delivered via SMS; an app offers richer weather-risk content for subscribers such as field agents.

IKEA Social Entrepreneurship describes the result: 'Iska', a daily 48-hour rainfall forecast delivered by text message for as little as $0.04/day, with monthly and seasonal outlooks in any local language, letting farmers sow, fertilize and harvest at optimum times. By 2026 Ignitia was active in Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal and Togo.

为什么管用

  • Mesoscale tropical physics fix the accuracy gap.
  • SMS works on any phone, anywhere.
  • A daily forecast costs less than the seed it protects.
  • Local languages make advice usable in the field.

可以搬走什么

When a generic model is wrong for your users, rebuild it around their conditions and deliver through a channel they already have — a 4-cent SMS beats an app nobody can load.

后来呢

Ignitia scaled from a Swedish startup to eight West African countries, backed by investors including Novastar, IKEA Social Entrepreneurship and FINCA Ventures, and expanded toward Brazil and climate-smart advisory services beyond rainfall forecasts.
