Evergreen's 24-ship round-the-world service made it the biggest container line

In 1984 Chang Yung-fa launched Evergreen's two-way round-the-world container service with 24 new ships; by 1985 it was the world's largest container carrier.

Evergreen Marine Corporation

那一手

Evergreen Marine began in 1968 with one secondhand general-cargo ship; founder Chang Yung-fa launched its containerization project in 1975, defying an industry downturn, and built a modern fleet for the Far East–U.S. East Coast trade.

In 1984 Chang launched a radical round-the-world service: 24 brand-new containerships sailing eastbound and westbound simultaneously, linking Asia, North America and Europe in continuous loops.

The two-way design kept ships earning in both directions and slashed repositioning of empty boxes; the company's corporate history says the innovation was so successful that by 1985 Evergreen had become the world's largest container carrier.

It was a scale and topology bet at once: the 24 new ships gave cost advantages rivals could not quickly match, and the global coverage let Evergreen sell one seamless round-the-world product.

为什么管用

  • Two-way loops meant cargo in both directions, not empty legs.
  • New purpose-built ships matched speed to the fixed schedule.
  • Global coverage became a single product customers could buy.
  • The 24-ship order created cost and scale advantages at once.

可以搬走什么

Redesign the network topology before adding capacity: a continuous two-way loop can lift utilization where point-to-point routes leave ships empty half the time.

后来呢

Evergreen kept round-the-world services into the 2000s, later replacing them with pendulum and east–west services, and remains among the world's top container lines with a fleet of more than 200 ships.
