Mastercard hid its tap-to-pay chip inside Carnival makeup stones

问题

At Brazil's Carnival revellers wear costumes with no pockets for a phone or wallet, and those items are the most stolen

背景

Brazil's Carnival is the country's biggest cultural event — days of nonstop costume, glitter, and body makeup, and almost no practical place to carry a smartphone or credit card. The absence of pockets is not cosmetic: by Serasa's data (cited in the campaign brief as '3 em cada 10 brasileiros'), three in ten Brazilians lose or have stolen the things they carry during the festivities, and cards and phones make up 64% of the cases of theft. Yet the event still handles roughly $2.5 billion in transactions in 2025 alone, so all that value flows by some payment route.

The obvious answers — a sturdier wallet, a prepaid wristband, a phone app — all fail on the same point: each is a separate object that costumed revellers do not carry and that a thief can still lift from a body. Mastercard needed a payment device that could not be separated from the wearer in a setting where nobody is holding anything.

换别人会怎么做

The standard responses to festival theft are a tamper-proof wallet, a preloaded wristband, a cashless phone app, or telling revellers to leave valuables at home. Every one of them still requires carrying a separate, liftable object — and every one collapses against the reality that the whole point of a costume is to carry nothing at all.

他们看到了什么

Mastercard saw theft as a payment-device problem and noticed the device does not have to be carried: Carnival-goers already glue jewelry to their bodies, so put the chip in the thing they would never abandon

那一手

Mastercard embedded its contactless payment chip — synced to a prepaid Mastercard issued through fintech Vanq — directly inside the cosmetic rhinestones (pedrarias de maquiagem corporal) that Carnival revellers already glue to their faces and bodies. Each wearer loads money onto the Vanq-backed prepaid card through a mobile app, then simply taps the chip-equipped stone against any contactless terminal to pay: no physical card, no phone, and no separate object to lose.

为什么管用

Putting the chip in body jewellery collapses the gap between paying and being. First, the device is inseparable from the wearer: a thief cannot lift a rhinestone off a face the way they can lift a phone from a pocket, so the loss vector disappears rather than shrinking. Second, it removes the very friction that made carrying a card or phone a liability — nothing separate to guard, drop, or forget — so the secure choice is also the convenient one, which is why revellers actually used it instead of defaulting back to cash. Third, it rides on a behaviour Carnival already demands: people cover themselves in body makeup and stones anyway, so adopting the payment costs the user nothing new, letting it spread through the crowd as a normal part of getting dressed rather than as an extra thing to buy.

值了多少

The case reports a 156% rise in daily transactions, zero thefts, and 30 million views; no independent publisher has verified these figures.

什么时候会失灵

It fails where the crowd is not already covering itself in an accessory, where contactless terminals and a local issuer to load the prepaid balance are absent, or where the 'wearable' can be snatched (a loose bracelet fails where a glued-on stone works). It presumes the audience trusts wearing money on their skin and that low-ticket, single-user prepaid spending is the norm, and it inherits the privacy edge-case of a short-range-readable token on the body — fine for cheap festival purchases, wrong for high-value or shared transactions.

后来呢

It is a 2025 pilot too new to call durable, but it flags a repeatable play: any high-theft, no-pocket event can be entered by hiding the payment device in the thing the crowd already wears, provided a local issuer and dense contactless terminals exist.
