At the turn of the 20th century, Great Lakes ships carrying coal and limestone were loaded and unloaded by men with shovels and wheelbarrows — expensive, slow and dangerous.
In 1908 the Wyandotte was launched from the Great Lakes Engineering Works with a conveyor unloading system. Improvements pushed her to clear 750 tons per hour by 1910, and Michigan Alkali's design prevailed over rivals' models even as those rivals tried to avoid paying royalties.
A self-unloader conveys its commodity to the shore under its own power, so shore-based handling is no longer needed and handling costs fall; it can also work in ports with little handling infrastructure.
why it works
- The conveyor is the cargo's interface, so it moves with the cargo instead of being built at every port.
- Turnaround collapses, so one ship does far more round trips per season.
- It removes dangerous shovel work and the crews needed for it.
- It makes small or remote facilities viable docks because they need no unloading gear.

what came after
The self-unloading bulk carrier became the dominant design on the Great Lakes and spread worldwide, now handling ore, coal, limestone, grain and more; the Wyandotte remained in service for 56 years and hauled over 20 million tons.
