The solution
Eastern Indonesian culinary and cultural heritage had limited information in regional languages. At WikiRempah, held on August 9, 2026, in Bandung, volunteers chose a spice-and-culture theme and made it a contribution marathon across four Wikimedia projects.
They visited an Eastern Indonesian restaurant, photographed dishes, and uploaded visuals to Wikimedia Commons; wrote recipes in Sundanese Wikibooks; expanded Sundanese Wikipedia articles about forts; and recorded spice vocabulary with Lingua Libre before embedding the audio in Sundanese Wiktionary.
The design was reuse: the same cultural fieldwork produced a visual asset, a recipe, an encyclopedia entry, and a pronunciation. Outputs included a chicken woku photo, a grilled skipjack tuna recipe, articles on Middelburg, Amsterdam, and Barneveld forts, and recordings for lauk, sagu, and sampeu.
What it achieved
One theme, four Wikimedia contribution surfaces
Why it worked
It converted one physical meetup into multiple durable artifacts rather than a single event report.
The theme gave contributors a common object while each project used its native format.
Native-speaker audio complemented text, making regional-language knowledge easier to use.
Open Commons licensing let the photos be reused by anyone.
What can be applied
When knowledge spans formats and languages, build one themed workflow that reuses the same source material across projects; each handoff makes the contribution feel cumulative, not fragmented.
Aftermath
The recorded words were embedded in existing Sundanese Wiktionary entries, so those entries now include pronunciation audio. The event also left Commons images, a Wikibooks recipe, and new or expanded Wikipedia articles. The author hopes other communities copy the multi-contribution meetup model; no later adoption data is reported.
