WeCapital turned shopkeeper IOUs into a credit record for unbanked women

WeCapital's 'Data Tienda' gathered repayment data from neighborhood shops so Mexico's unbanked women got a credit history banks could lend against.

the move

In Mexico, millions of low-income women can't start businesses because they can't access bank credit. The national banking commission found 83% of them have no credit history, so loan applications are routinely rejected.

The contradiction is that these same women reliably support their families with small loans from neighborhood shops — a constant but invisible record of repayment. WeCapital's 'Data Tienda' is a financial-information hub that collected credit information from local merchants' accounts and used it to construct credit histories for millions of unbanked Mexican women, giving banks something they could safely lend against.

The ambition was to bring more than 35 million women into the banking system, turning an informal, overlooked record into an on-boardable financial identity — and turning WeCapital from a lender facing a closed pool into one with a newly visible market.

why it works

  • The repayment evidence already existed in shop ledgers; the campaign only had to change its format.
  • A woman who repays the shop is a safe borrower, so the informal record was a better predictor than no record at all.
  • It built the market for the lender (new bankable customers) instead of just advertising to it.
  • It attacked the root cause — missing credit history — rather than the symptom of rejected loans.

what transfers

Credit is built from evidence, not from income. Find the informal record of reliability your target already has, formalise it, and the neglected pool becomes a market you can lend to safely.

what came after

'Data Tienda' won the El Ojo de Iberoamérica Gran Ojo in Creative Data (2022) plus multiple golds, and a Bronze in Creative Business Transformation at Cannes Lions 2023. It became a reference for turning informal transactions into formal credit, and for a lender creating the data infrastructure that opens its own market.
