the move
A warehouse is usually built on fixed slots, with product A always living in aisle 3. But demand shifts and mixes change, so half the space sits unused while the other half overflows.
Walmart began working with Symbotic, founded by Rick Cohen, in 2021 on 25 regional distribution centers; in May 2022 it expanded to automate all 42 centers over more than eight years.
Symbotic's AI software uses dense modular storage and a fleet of autonomous robots. It plays Tetris with inventory, deciding where each case is stored and dispatching robots to retrieve it, while robotic palletizers assemble aisle-ready pallets.
The point is not the robots but the software's freedom: because any case can go into any slot, the warehouse uses nearly all its cube, and one center can source thousands of store orders without pinning products to places.
