USB-C won the port war as one reversible cable for power, data and video
The 2014 USB-C spec made a small reversible connector that carries power, data and video; Apple, Intel and then IEC adoption made it the universal port.

For two decades USB meant bulky, one-way connectors, and laptops still needed separate ports for power, monitors and peripherals. Proprietary answers like Lightning proved users wanted reversible plugs but fragmented the market.
The USB Implementers Forum completed the USB Type-C specification in 2014: a small, reversible connector built on USB 3.1 with alternate modes and Power Delivery up to 100W. One cable could charge a laptop, drive a display and move data.
Adoption came fast: Apple's 12-inch MacBook used it as its only port in early 2015, Intel moved Thunderbolt 3 onto the connector, and by 2016 IEC had formally adopted it. The USB-IF called it the fastest transition in 15 years, and the last cable anyone would need.
