The U.S. Women's Team Pursuit finished sixth at the 2023 World Championships, missing the podium by only 0.159 seconds. With less funding than powerhouse cycling nations, America could not simply spend its way to a better result.
USA Cycling turned to operations research, machine learning and real-time analytics. Its Project 4:05 optimised rider selection, race strategy and aerodynamic efficiency, modelling the competition as a system of controllable decisions rather than a test of raw effort.
The models projected a gold-medal target time of 4:05 and showed exactly where the time was: which riders to field, when each should pull, how to rotate to keep lower-energy riders recovering, and how to arrange positions for aerodynamic gains. A 9.2% aerodynamic reduction for one rider is one example of a modelled, not guessed, improvement.
At Paris 2024 the team rode 4:04.302, beating the target and taking gold. The same analytics-driven method won USA Cycling the 2025 Franz Edelman Award for operations research.
