As an Oregon teenager, Dick Fosbury could not clear competitive heights with the straddle technique every coach taught. From 1963 he began bending his scissors jump backward, arching over the bar spine-first — a form coaches ridiculed and one newspaper called an airborne seizure. Crucially, foam landing pits had only just replaced sawdust: the technique's precondition had existed for barely a few years.

The rules of the high jump had never specified which way a jumper should face. Nobody had looked at that door, because landing on your neck in sawdust was its own rule.

Keep refining the straddle: more leg strength, a faster approach, a cleaner kick over the bar. That was the only avenue anyone worked, because face-down techniques were the entire category of 'how high jump is done' — going over the bar backward wasn't a rejected alternative, it was not a considered option at all, since landing on your neck or spine in a sawdust or dirt pit was genuinely dangerous.

Fosbury noticed that the reason nobody jumped backward was not a rule of the sport, it was a fact about the landing surface — and that fact had just quietly stopped being true. Foam landing pits had only recently replaced sawdust, which meant the entire basis for 'you must face the bar' had expired without anyone going back to check whether the old convention still held.

He reinvented the jump itself: curved run-up, back to the bar, landing on foam that had only just been invented. Legal all along; unthinkable until seen.

why it works

Once landing on the back and shoulders stopped being dangerous, an arched, backward-facing jump became not just survivable but mechanically better: arching the body over the bar lets a jumper's center of mass pass under the bar even as the whole body clears over it, which the face-down straddle's geometry cannot achieve. The same muscular effort that used to require lifting the whole center of mass above the bar now only has to lift the body's curve above it, converting a stale safety constraint's disappearance directly into a physical advantage the instant someone tried the technique the constraint had been suppressing.

where it breaks

The move only pays off when the old constraint has genuinely lapsed and not merely gone unexamined — if foam pits hadn't actually arrived yet, jumping backward would still have been reckless, not visionary. It also depends on the alternative being legal, not just untried: a rule that explicitly required facing the bar would have made the whole idea moot regardless of the landing surface. And it requires the abandoned direction to hold a real mechanical edge once tried; most techniques nobody uses are unused because they're worse, and only checking the actual physics — or the courage to test it in competition — tells a stale constraint apart from a bad idea correctly avoided.

Fosbury took gold in Mexico City 1968 at 2.24m, and within a decade virtually every elite jumper in the world had switched. The Flop is the cleanest recorded case of a legal move nobody had thought to try — the door was open the whole time.
