TriOptima's triReduce compressed trillions in offsetting swaps off banks' books

Banks' swaps offset each other but stayed on the books; triReduce matched them across firms and terminated them, shrinking notional, risk and margin costs.

the move

Over-the-counter derivatives accumulate like sediment: every new hedge adds trades that offset older ones, so gross notional balloons while true exposure stays small. That bloat costs capital, margin and operational risk.

TriOptima's triReduce, introduced in 2003, runs risk-constrained multilateral compression: it collects portfolios from many banks, finds cycles of trades that net to zero and terminates them. The 2022 press release from its successor OSTTRA reported $26.4 trillion of interest-rate derivatives compressed in September alone, and Hedgeweek recorded more than $750 trillion eliminated by 2016.

Academic work on the mechanism — D'Errico and Roukny's Compressing Over-the-Counter Markets — shows compression rapidly shrinks and reshapes trading networks, and BIS data cited by TriOptima show interest-rate notionals fell 23 percent between December 2014 and June 2015.

why it works

  • Compression cuts gross notional, which directly lowers margin, capital and funding costs.
  • Terminating offsetting trades reduces counterparty risk without changing economic exposure.
  • Multilateral matching captures offsets no single bank could net bilaterally.
  • Post-crisis leverage rules made the capital relief worth paying for.

what transfers

Find positions that cancel across counterparties: when two sides of the market net to nothing, a neutral matching service can delete the carrying cost — notional, margin, capital — for everyone.

what came after

triReduce expanded from interest-rate swaps into credit, FX and cleared trades, working with clearinghouses worldwide; TriOptima became part of OSTTRA, the CME/S&P Global post-trade venture, and compression is now routine OTC market plumbing.
