Toyota's Prius split the drive between engine and motor, doubling fuel efficiency
Instead of picking gas or electric, Toyota split power between both so the engine runs where it is efficient and the motor fills the gaps.

the move
In the early 1990s Toyota set a goal of a car that used roughly half the fuel of an equivalent conventional car. Shrinking the engine alone would have made the car weak; going fully electric was blocked by batteries. The answer was a hybrid: a small Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine plus a permanent-magnet electric motor, combined through a power-split device.
The power-split lets the engine run at near-constant load while the electric motor handles acceleration peaks and recharges during braking and deceleration. Because the engine never has to follow the wheels' demand directly, its air-fuel ratio stays stable and its efficiency stays high. The engine also shuts off automatically when the car is standing still.
When the Prius went on sale in Japan on December 10, 1997, Toyota said the system achieved 28 km/L (10.15 mode)—nearly twice the fuel efficiency of conventional gasoline cars—and cut CO, HC and NOx emissions to about one-tenth of the levels set by the regulations of the time.

what came after
The Prius became the first mass-produced hybrid passenger car and the template for hybrid drivetrains across the industry; the later Hybrid Synergy Drive refined the power-split architecture. Toyota has sold tens of millions of hybrids worldwide, and the power-split concept remains the core of its hybrid lineup.
