the move
Tesla built its own charging connector with the 2012 Model S because no standard existed, and by 2022 its Supercharger network was the largest in North America — but its plug worked only with Tesla cars while most other EVs used the CCS connector. Two incompatible plugs meant a fragmented charging experience across the continent.
On November 11, 2022 Tesla opened the design: it renamed the connector the North American Charging Standard (NACS), said network operators already planned to integrate it, and announced it was working with standards bodies to codify it as a public standard. Ford followed in May 2023, GM in June 2023, both switching new vehicles to NACS ports by 2025.
On June 27, 2023 SAE International announced it would standardize the Tesla-developed NACS connector as J3400, so any supplier or manufacturer could use, make or deploy it. The single design choice — give the format away instead of tolling it — converted a proprietary advantage into industry infrastructure almost overnight.

Tesla's network became the common rail of North American EV charging rather than a walled garden.
