St. Jude ChildCare Centres shelter the family of an Indian child while it undergoes cancer treatment — the family must otherwise sleep rough, and without safe housing many abandon treatment. 4 million new cancer cases a year, so it needs to keep growing the accommodation it gives away. For five straight years donations fell 35%, because the sector's crowdfunding platforms (Ketto, Milaap) farm patient-poverty for donations, training the public to scroll past suffering. A 2014 CSR rule compounding the squeeze forces small NGOs to hand back unspent corporate grants rather than bank them flexibly.
A conventional appeal — show a sick child, ask for money — was exactly the pattern donors had become numb to, so more of the same promised only continued decline.
Instead of showing suffering children to wring out pity, Ogilvy made a 90-second film set from inside the shelter's admissions room. Two living, named children need the one bed left; the protagonist is the manager who must choose which gets housed and which is sent back out — and out means her treatment ends. By placing the camera behind the manager's desk the film makes the viewer perform the choice: to house one child is to condemn the other. Only the final frame pivots to the ask — that a donation means one more bed, so the viewer never has to choose again.
Cast the viewer as the manager choosing which child gets the last bed, making the shortfall their ethical failure, then offer donation as the way to never choose.
Pity appeals let donors stay observers, so they scroll past.
The film puts the viewer in the manager's seat, making the shortfall personal.
Performing the choice triggers the caregiver instinct and moral discomfort.
The QR code offers a one-tap fix, converting discomfort into action.
When capacity is the scarce resource, let the audience perform the scarcity decision; they'll feel the shortfall as their own and act to fix it.
Donations lifted 1.5X above the seven-year average and the charity roughly quadrupled the children it could shelter.
