Mammoet's SPMT turned one heavy load into many wheels that steer themselves

An SPMT is a modular platform of self-driven, computer-steered axles; bolt enough units together and a 7,500-ton building rolls away at walking pace.

The solution

Moving a ship section, an offshore platform or a hotel building used to require a crane or transporter scaled to the whole weight. In the early 1980s Mammoet refined the self-propelled modular transporter: standard 2.44-metre-wide modules that fit on ISO container flatracks, with 360-degree steering, commissioned from Scheuerle; deliveries started in 1983.

The trick is that capacity comes from joining modules. Axles are computer-controlled and individually steerable, each with its own drive, so units link lengthwise and side-by-side and run from one control panel; the 7,500-ton hotel moved in Sanya in 2023 rode 254 axle lines.

Wikipedia records the scale: the Shell Curlew FPSO was moved with 748 axle lines in 2022, and shipbuilders have replaced gantry cranes with SPMTs, cutting the cost of moving huge loads by millions of dollars. Mammoet's own history calls the 1983 SPMT a revolutionary, now industry-standard piece of equipment.

What can be applied

When a capability has a hard ceiling, stop scaling the single machine — make it modular and scale the fleet; no load ever exceeds any one unit.

Aftermath

SPMTs are now industry standard for heavy transport and bridge replacement. ESTA published a best-practice guide in 2016 after tipping incidents, and in 2022 Mammoet and Scheuerle introduced an electric version to cut emissions and noise in mines and plants.
