SOS India turned a street kid's ad recreations into a donation engine
SOS Children's Villages India had a street kid recreate famous ads and offer them to brands in exchange for donations, raising corporate donations 61.5%.

the move
SOS Children's Villages India runs on donations, which makes it chronically dependent on a fickle pool. The obvious route — celebrity endorsements and appeals — is expensive and often ignored.
FCB India, FCB Chicago and Kinnect recruited SOS's 'first brand ambassador': Chatpat, a ten-year-old from the streets of Mumbai. He shared 'gyaan' videos about life on the streets, then recreated the most recognisable ads and posted them publicly, challenging the brands to respond with donations.
It was, in FCB's words, the rare donation campaign that *gives* before it asks: brand impressions rose 1506%, corporate donations rose 61.5% from the prior year (over $300k in new corporate donation), and it swept Cannes Lions 2022 with two Gold, two Silver and two Bronze across Social & Influencer, Media and Direct.
why it works
- Brands got crowd-pleasing content, so backing SOS became a marketing decision, not a handout.
- The social challenge was public, so declining the donation also meant declining the viral content.
- A real street kid telling his own story carried credibility no actor could fake.
- It converted an existing budget line (marketing) instead of competing for charity dollars.
what transfers
When you're asking for money, lead by giving something the giver actually wants. Connect your cause to a budget already spent on attention, and trade content for it instead of appealing to guilt.
what came after
#Chatpat did more than fund a year: it created a reusable model — brand buzz-for-donation — that SOS could run against any corporation, and it put the 60-year-old NGO on the global map with six Cannes Lions. FCB described it as a breakthrough in corporate funding for NGOs.
