The solution
Anniversary films are a genre with a credibility problem: every heritage brand says it stands for craftsmanship, and most prove it with the same slick CGI montage. Japanese select-shop pioneer SHIPS — founded in 1975 out of the legendary MIURA & SONS store in Shibuya — faced exactly that trap for its 50th anniversary in 2025. Its positioning, 'the best ordinary', rests on the care of the people behind the clothes; a digital montage would have contradicted it.
For the anniversary campaign, titled 'CRAFTMAN, SHIPS' — the people who embody the brand, named by a pun on the brand itself — Hakuhodo Gravity chose the most laborious path available: a fully analog stop-motion animation in which every frame is a hand-stitched embroidery. Skilled artisans sewed all 499 frames one by one; joined in sequence, the stitches form a delicate, warm film no render farm can imitate.
Direction went to Atsushi Makino, the animation director behind YOASOBI's 'Gunjo' and Vaundy's 'Okitegami'. The embroidery metaphor is structural, not decorative: the campaign says SHIPS moves forward by spinning the thread of clothing's origin, stitching each person's story into one continuing voyage. The film anchored a year of anniversary activity — a special site, limited-edition products with partner brands, store decoration and transit ads — under the statement 'Aoi mama susumu' ('Keep going, still blue').
The film won the Industry Craft Grand Prix at Spikes Asia 2026 and further craft honors at ADFEST and Cannes Lions 2026. The anniversary year ran across SHIPS, SHIPS KIDS, SHIPS any and outlet stores with anniversary tartan and limited merchandise.
What it achieved
Animate with embroidery: the medium proves the craft claim
Why it worked
The medium is self-certifying: a film that took hundreds of hand-sewn frames cannot be faked by a brand that does not actually value craft.
It flipped the usual efficiency logic — choosing the slowest possible production method was itself the marketing claim.
The 'CRAFTMAN, SHIPS' pun named the brand's own people as the heroes, so staff appeared in campaign visuals alongside the embroidery.
One hero artifact carried a year of retail, product and out-of-home activity, keeping the whole anniversary coherent.
What can be applied
When a brand's claim is craftsmanship, the most persuasive proof is a deliverable that could only exist through that craft; medium and message become the same object.
Aftermath
The embroidery film won the Industry Craft Grand Prix at Spikes Asia 2026, a Print & Outdoor Craft Silver at ADFEST 2026, and further metal at Cannes Lions 2026. SHIPS' 50th-anniversary program ran for about a year from 2025, spanning limited products, store and transit advertising.
