SF Express built China's first private cargo airline so parcels fly on its own schedule
SF Airlines launched in 2009 with one Boeing 757 freighter; by 2023 its 80-plane fleet made SF China's biggest air-cargo carrier.
SF Express
the move
China's express market grew faster than passenger airlines could carry parcels. SF Express, already the courier market leader, founded SF Airlines in 2009 as the country's first private express cargo airline; at the end of that year its first freighter, a B757-200F, flew the Shenzhen–Hangzhou route.
The fleet grew through a decade of expansion: ten aircraft by 2012, the first international route in 2013, first widebody 767 in 2016, the first 747-400ERF and 50 aircraft in 2018, and 80 freighters by March 2023. SF Airlines became China's largest cargo airline and the air arm of SF's ground network, linking hubs in Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Beijing and Ezhou.
why it works
- Dedicated freighters freed parcel schedules from passenger-airline capacity.
- An owned fleet could serve second-tier cities commercial airlines ignored.
- Aircraft, hubs and ground trucks formed one coordinated national network.
- Scale in airlift became the moat rivals could not quickly replicate.
what transfers
When a critical transport input is a bottleneck you cannot book, owning the asset beats renting it — control of schedule is a product feature.
what came after
By 2023 SF Airlines operated 80 freighters, including widebody 747 and 767 aircraft, and its air network anchored SF Express's nationwide and international delivery promise. The buildout became the model other Chinese couriers followed.
