Schnabel railcars let the load be the car, carrying 1,000-ton cargo by rail

A Schnabel car splits in two and grips the load between its arms, so a 1,000-ton transformer becomes part of the car and rides on 36 axles.

The solution

Shipping a 900-ton transformer by rail used to mean building a flatcar strong enough to carry it on top. Schnabel cars (German Tragschnabelwagen, 'carrying-beak wagon') invert that: the load is suspended between the two ends of the car by lifting arms, so the load itself forms part of the car's structure, and span bolsters spread its weight over many wheels.

The first U.S. Schnabel car, WECX 200, was built for Westinghouse by Greenville Steel Car in the 1960s. In 2012 Kasgro completed WECX 801 for Westinghouse Nuclear: 36 axles (18 per half), a tare of about 400 short tons, a load limit of 1,017.9 short tons, and hydraulics that shift the load 44 inches vertically and 40 inches laterally to clear obstructions.

The Beaver County Times reported the car as the world's largest railroad car: 251 feet long, 36 axles, 2.5 million pounds fully loaded, built over 18 months on plans derived from a Krupp car, carrying nuclear reactor parts from Charleston, S.C. Loaded trains run at 15 mph and need a six-operator crew beyond the train crew.

When payload exceeds vehicle strength, stop building a stronger vehicle — carry the load through its own structure and add wheels where the load is.

Aftermath

Schnabel cars remain a niche: Wikipedia counts about 30 in North America, 31 in Europe, 25 in Asia and one in Australia as of 2012. Heavy transporters often prefer hydraulic modular trailers as faster and cheaper, but the load-as-structure principle is still used when rail is the only corridor.
