Savlon's soap chalk made hand-washing a classroom habit and won the Cannes Grand Prix

Ogilvy baked soap into the chalk rural kids already handled, so writing sessions ended at the tap — 150,000 students in phase one.

ITC Foods (Savlon) · Ogilvy Mumbai

The solution

Millions of rural Indian children eat with their hands but wash them with water only — a leading cause of illness and school dropout. Campaigns and soap dispensers had not changed the habit, and Savlon's Healthy India Mission needed a low-cost idea that worked in ordinary rural schools.

Ogilvy Mumbai's insight was the classroom itself: primary students still write on black slates with chalk, and chalk dust smears their hands every lesson. Savlon made Healthy Hands Chalk Sticks — chalk powder mixed with soap granules — so the dust on a child's hands turned into soap when they reached the tap before lunch.

The intervention required no new behaviour: the chalk was already there and the tap was already there. Phase one supplied the sticks free to 100 rural schools in 20 districts, reaching 150,000 students; within three weeks most children had picked up the daily hand-washing habit, and demand from schools and NGOs led to a pan-India distribution model.

On Children's Day the innovation was released as a film to widen the conversation. It won 10 Lions at Cannes 2017 and, in 2018, the Creative Effectiveness Grand Prix — beating Fearless Girl — as India's most effective campaign.

Why it worked

  • The intervention lived inside an object already present in every classroom, so adoption cost nothing.
  • No instruction was needed — the product itself changed the behaviour.
  • The school system gave it distribution for free, from 100 schools to a national model.
  • Measurable habit change within three weeks made the proof credible.

What can be applied

Don't add a behaviour to a routine — replace an object inside it. The soap arrived through the chalk kids already touched, so the habit changed with no extra ask.

Aftermath

The campaign became the flagship of ITC's Savlon Swasth India Mission and won India its first Grand Prix for Creative Effectiveness at Cannes 2018 after ten Lions in 2017. Its template — embedding a health behaviour in an existing classroom ritual — was cited as a model for rural hygiene programmes and influenced later school-based health work in India.
