Sadia's chain-wide models saved $50M in poultry production

Sadia Concórdia, Brazil's largest poultry producer, processed over 300 million chickens and 11 million turkeys a year. Since 1990 it increasingly used mathematical models to improve decision making throughout its production chain, where feed, flock growth, and hundreds of product weight classes interact.
The models did several things at once: they improved conversion of feed to live bird weight; allocated birds across more than 300 products classified by weight range, accounting for variation between and within flocks; supported daily production plans fulfilled almost 100 percent; and cut lead time for meeting market demand.
Measured over three years, the program saved more than $50 million, mainly from better feed conversion, a higher-value product mix, and near-total plan fulfillment. The work was pioneering for poultry and was presented as adaptable to other animal-processing industries.
