Robinson let Thai shoppers choose what to discount
Robinson's Salesation sale put the discount stickers in shoppers' hands — pick the item you love, get the price cut.
Robinson Department Store
the move
Thailand's Robinson department store runs an annual Salesation sale, but the traditional model — the store choosing which items to discount — often misses what shoppers actually want to buy.
Robinson flipped it: shoppers put stickers on the items they wanted discounted, and the price came down on those products. The store's job became hosting the customer's choice rather than predicting it.
The Air Drummer film, by Wolf BKK with director Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit, dramatized the mechanic: a girl practices drums on air every day; her mother, finally understanding, races to Robinson with a 90% discount sticker for the drums her daughter loves. 'Everyone has what they wish, but one who has a discount sticker gets what they want.'
The March 2023 campaign was shortlisted at D&AD 2024 — a discount mechanic engineered to make shoppers feel seen rather than processed.
why it works
- Shopper-chosen discounts match the sale to actual desire
- The sticker is a tangible token of control shoppers enjoy holding
- The film gives the mechanic an emotional story worth sharing
- The store gathers foot traffic without predicting demand
what transfers
Give the customer control of the discount and the discount becomes a gift they chose: when shoppers pick what to mark down, the sale sells self-expression, not just price.
what came after
The 2023 Salesation campaign ran across Robinson stores and digital channels and was shortlisted at D&AD 2024. The sticker mechanic gave the retailer a repeatable promotional format that turns inventory control over to demand rather than guessing at it.
