The plug-in reefer container turned every container ship into a cold chain
In the 1970s a standard box with a bolt-on cooling unit ended the era of dedicated refrigerated ships.

The solution
For the first two decades of container shipping, perishables were a liability: a steel box in the sun became a solar oven, and in cold climates the reverse happened. Chilled cargo still moved on dedicated refrigerated ships, such as the banana carriers built from 1901 onward, which limited perishable trade to a few specialized routes.
In the 1970s refrigerated containers arrived: standard boxes with their own cooling units, designed to be carried by ordinary container ships and plugged into the ship's electrical system at sea, and into reefer plug points or generators in terminals and inland. The container network itself became a cold chain.
The shift changed what could cross an ocean. Bananas, meat, tropical fruit and other heat-sensitive cargo no longer needed a dedicated reefer fleet; any line with plugs could carry them. The same logic later produced smart reefers that monitor temperature and predict failures.
Why it worked
- A plug-in unit rides standard ships, so no dedicated reefer fleet or route is needed
- Shipboard power and terminal plugs keep the chain unbroken door to door
- The box standardizes handling: cranes, chassis and stacking all treat it as a normal container
- Capacity scales with the whole container network instead of a specialist fleet
- Once chilled cargo rode ordinary services, perishable trade exploded beyond old routes
What can be applied
When a specialized system is expensive and route-bound, modularize it onto the shared standard and the whole network inherits its capability.
Aftermath
Reefers became the backbone of maritime cold chains, and the refrigerated container industry generated $9.7 billion in 2022. Dedicated reefer ships survive for some trades, but most of the world's perishable ocean freight now moves in plug-in containers, monitored remotely and increasingly managed by AI for predictive maintenance.
