Bengaluru's darshinis have fed the city's working population for decades with cheap, fast South Indian food. The Rameshwaram Cafe, launched in 2021 by Raghavendra Rao and Divya Rao, took that formula and gave it quick-service discipline, polish and a brand.
The founders deliberately kept the menu tiny — signature dosas, idlis and vadas — and focused on fresh preparation in open kitchens, quick service and consistent quality. Hygiene and presentation, with food served on banana leaves and sambrani fragrance in the air, turned an everyday meal into an experience that spread on social media.
With Rao running kitchen operations and customer experience and Divya, a chartered accountant and IIM Ahmedabad graduate, running finance and strategy, the cafe expanded from Indiranagar across Bengaluru and into Hyderabad and Mumbai, monetizing through its own restaurants plus a franchise and royalty model, with a first overseas outlet planned in Dubai.
