The Rainhill Trials made a race pick the railway's locomotive

Facing doubt about steam, the Liverpool & Manchester Railway held a £500 performance contest; Stephenson's Rocket won on boiler and blast pipe.

the move

The Liverpool & Manchester Railway had to choose between locomotives, stationary engines and horses, and the directors were far from convinced steam would work. In 1829 they announced a trial at Rainhill: a £500 prize for the engine that best met published rules measuring strength, power and reliability.

Five machines arrived and three seriously competed — Novelty, Sans Pareil and Rocket. Novelty was faster but broke down, Sans Pareil exceeded the weight limit, and Stephenson's Rocket, designed by Robert Stephenson with Henry Booth, combined a multitubular boiler and a blast-pipe exhaust that made it the only engine to complete the trials reliably.

Rocket won, the railway ordered four more Stephenson locomotives, and the trials settled the great question in public. Crowds of over 10,000 watched, newspapers celebrated, and the Liverpool & Manchester opened in 1830 as the world's first inter-city passenger railway run by steam.
