Progresso hijacked the cough drop aisle with a soup you can suck on
Progresso turned chicken noodle soup into a hard candy drop, stole the sick-day ritual from cough drops, and lifted category growth 5%.

the move
Progresso was America's No. 2 soup brand in a category in decline, and it was outspent 6:1 by the dominant red can. Worse, 44% of its annual sales were crammed into the short cold-and-flu season, and consumers were now opting for cough drops instead of soup.
The insight was that the fight had moved to the pharmacy aisle: 81% of people reach for fast OTC relief when they're sick. So Progresso built a product that looked like relief but tasted like soup — a chicken-noodle-soup-flavored hard candy drop in a mini can.
Sold in three limited waves during National Soup Month, each drop was announced online and gone within minutes, using scarcity to build anticipation. Creator 'Soup-port Kits' kept the joke alive on TikTok and Instagram.
It delivered a category turnaround: the ready-to-serve soup category grew 5% year over year with Progresso contributing 41% of that growth (versus 4% for the top competitor), a +14-point jump in dollar sales, a 196% rise in top-of-mind awareness, and 200% more Google search interest.
why it works
- It invaded the aisle where the customer now actually chooses a cold remedy
- Making a candy that tasted like soup was specific, weird and unforgettable
- Limited sneaker-style drops created scarcity and urgency
- The joke traveled serially, so PR and social amplified a small product spend
what transfers
When an adjacent category steals your customer's ritual, outdo it by making your product the ritual — not by shouting louder in your own aisle.
what came after
Soup Drops won a Gold Lion for PR and a Silver for Brand Experience & Activation at Cannes Lions 2025, and was shortlisted further. It reversed a category decline, lifting Progresso's share of awareness while the top competitor's fell, and became a template for a challenger stealing a ritual rather than fighting for share in its own aisle.
