Powerade wrote mental-health pauses into its athlete sponsorship contracts

Powerade rewrote its sponsorship contracts so athletes can pause for mental well-being without losing income — a slogan made legally binding.

Powerade

the move

Since 2022 Powerade had argued that pausing for mental well-being is strength, not weakness. But its own athlete sponsorship agreements protected physical injuries while saying nothing about mental health breaks — the exact contradiction the brand claimed to fight.

The Athletes Code was a contractual provision added to every Powerade athlete contract, drafted with athletes, mental-health advocates and legal experts, guaranteeing that pausing for mental well-being would not jeopardize sponsorship. New contracts went to 19 athletes chosen for their own experiences with that lack of support.

Launch films told their stories, turning a legal change into a movement. The campaign reached 766 million people across PR and social, with 376 media outlets including Forbes, ESPN and USA Today covering the initiative, and 100% positive sentiment on social channels.

why it works

  • Changing its own contract proved the brand's purpose claim.
  • Athletes' personal stories made a legal clause emotionally real.
  • The move pressured competitors to follow or look hypocritical.
  • It shifted the category conversation from talk to structural change.

what transfers

A purpose claim is only credible when the company applies it to itself first; changing your own contract is proof no campaign budget can buy.

what came after

The Athletes Code was shortlisted for the Cannes Lions 2025 Titanium prize and earned a Merit at the 2025 One Show. The contractual protection applied to every Powerade athlete, and the campaign's media push generated 115 million+ paid impressions across nine markets while establishing a blueprint other sponsors could copy.
