Pneumatic tubes shot New York's mail underground at 35 mph

From the 1890s, canisters of mail were propelled by air through city tubes, bypassing street traffic.

the move

By the 1890s, horses and streetcars made delivering letters between a city's post offices slow and expensive, so the mail could not clear the volume piling up.

The answer was to leave the surface entirely. The Post Office Department buried iron pipes under the streets and ran canisters of mail through them on compressed air, so a letter could travel between post offices at high speed regardless of road traffic.

New York began using the tubes in 1897, and by 1914 about 30 percent of first-class letters through the city's main post office moved through them. The system turned the congested street into a non-factor for the one thing that had to be fast.

what came after

The Post Office suspended the pneumatic tubes in 1953 as trucks and cheaper surface delivery won, but the same idea survived for moving cash, samples and data: automated capsule systems still run in hospitals, banks and logistics.
