Nintendo built the Game Boy on old, cheap tech on purpose, and it outlasted every sharper rival

By the late 1980s Nintendo's console business had shown what powerful hardware could do, and the obvious move for a handheld follow-up was more of the same: sharper resolution, more colors, a faster chip. Nintendo's hardware lead Gunpei Yokoi — the engineer behind the Game & Watch line and the cross-shaped D-pad — had a standing doctrine against exactly that trap, which he called 'lateral thinking with withered technology': take parts the industry has already perfected and made cheap, and find a genuinely new use for them, rather than chase newest components while they're still expensive and unreliable.
Yokoi's team built the Game Boy around a decade-old, low-power monochrome LCD and processor his engineers already knew intimately from years of Game & Watch production, instead of the vivid backlit color screens rivals were racing toward. It launched in Japan and the US in 1989, at roughly half what a comparable color handheld would cost to build.

Chase the newest, most capable components available -- a sharper color LCD, a faster processor -- the standard hardware-maker instinct in a specs race, competing on the same axis every rival is racing toward.
what they saw
Yokoi saw that a handheld's newest components were also its least proven and most power-hungry, and that once a game was engaging enough, players stopped caring about resolution or color -- meaning the entire specs race was optimizing for something buyers barely valued while ignoring battery life and cost, which they valued enormously.
the move
Design lead Gunpei Yokoi rejected the industry's race toward more powerful chips and color LCDs — his own doctrine, 'lateral thinking with withered technology' — and built the Game Boy on a decade-old, well-understood 4-shade monochrome display and low-power processor instead of matching rivals on specs.
why it works
Building on a component generation the industry had already perfected and made cheap meant Nintendo's engineers deeply understood its failure modes and power characteristics from years of prior production, letting them extract far more battery life and reliability from it than a newer, less-understood chip could offer at any price. Because the older display and processor cost a fraction of a color equivalent, Nintendo could sell the Game Boy at a price point color rivals couldn't match, while the low power draw delivered roughly six times the battery life of the color Game Gear on fewer batteries -- durability and affordability that mattered far more to actual buyers than the specs they were foregoing, which is exactly why the underspecified device outsold every sharper competitor.

The Game Boy ran roughly 30 hours on four AA batteries against the color Game Gear's 3–5 hours on six, launched in 1989 at a fraction of a color handheld's price, and went on to sell over 118 million units; Sega never made another handheld.
where it breaks
The approach only works when the withheld capability (color, resolution, processing power) genuinely matters less to the buyer than the tradeoffs it would cost -- in a market where the newer specification is the actual reason customers buy (a gaming PC, a professional camera), deliberately under-speccing loses on the dimension that decides the sale. It also depends on the older technology being cheap and well-understood enough that engineers can extract real advantages from familiarity; using withered technology nobody on the team actually has deep expertise with forfeits the reliability benefit without gaining anything back in return.
what came after
A year later Sega's color Game Gear made the trade-off explicit: sharper graphics, but 3–5 hours of battery life on six batteries against the Game Boy's roughly 30 hours on four. The Game Boy went on to sell over 118 million units and Sega never released another handheld — Yokoi's doctrine became a standing lesson in product strategy, cited well outside game design.
