Sneaker launches typically rely on pop-up shops, launch events, or paid media to draw customers to a specific place at a specific time — infrastructure built from scratch that has to earn its own audience against every other demand on people's attention that day. São Paulo already had an audience-drawing infrastructure Nike didn't own or build: a dense citywide network of large-scale street-art murals painted by local artists, many featuring recurring characters the city's residents already recognized and had personal relationships with, entirely independent of any brand.
Rather than build new retail infrastructure, Nike and AKQA partnered with the Brazilian collective InstaGraffiti to repaint the feet of existing, already-famous graffiti characters across the city with new Air Max sneakers — the murals themselves, already part of the city's everyday visual landscape, became the storefront.
Put the product on existing beloved murals: geo-tagging an updated mural unlocked early purchase, making wall-finding the purchase mechanic.
The murals already had emotional weight and citywide visibility, so Nike inherited attention rather than competing for it.
Finding a mural and unlocking a purchase became an act of engaging with something residents valued, not a transaction wrapped in advertising.
The murals stayed as permanent public art, converting campaign spend into lasting cultural value.
The repainting doubled as a symbolic restoration after the governor's whitewashing, adding cultural weight.
Before building new infrastructure to reach an audience, look for an existing asset that audience already engages with and layer your offer onto it.
The campaign drove a reported 32% sales increase with every featured model selling out, won the Cannes Lions Grand Prix for Social & Behaviour Change in the Media category, and left the repainted murals themselves in place afterward as a lasting addition to São Paulo's street-art landscape rather than a temporary campaign asset that was torn down.
