Panasonic's National Bicycle built custom bikes in two weeks with a separate factory line

the move
In the late 1980s National Bicycle Company—a division of Matsushita Electric Industrial, now Panasonic—launched the Panaracer System: customers designed their own bicycles at specialized retailers, choosing frame size, color and components from millions of configurations.
Orders were transmitted to the factory, where robots welded and assembled each frame to the customer's measurements; the average delivery time was about two weeks. Kotha's European Management Journal study of the firm describes it pursuing mass production and mass customization simultaneously in two different factories.
The bet was that personalization could rescue a product being commoditized by cheap imports. The program was technically pioneering but expensive to run, and it was eventually wound down as the market shifted—yet it became the canonical teaching example of mass customization.
