The solution
Through 2020 and 2021, Malaysia's movement-control orders repeatedly shut restaurant dining rooms. Casual-dining brands responded with recipe videos and delivery promos, all fighting in the same visual feeds. Nando's Malaysia's brief, as recorded in its Kancil entry, was to convince Malaysians that 'the music, art, hospitality, and flavour inside Nando's restaurants can reignite dampened spirits' — that the restaurant experience itself was what they were missing.
The agency Fishermen Integrated answered with what the entry calls the first brand film you didn't need your eyes to see. The 'Unwatchable Brand Film' discarded visuals altogether and used immersive audio — music, sound effects and sound design — to give listeners 'a taste of Nando's heat, flavour, music, vibes, hospitality, and even art in their imagination'. Where every competitor showed food, Nando's made people cook up the restaurant themselves, in their own heads, at the moment of maximum inaccessibility.
The inversion did double duty. As experience, imagination fills in with more appetite than any camera shot; as media, an 'unwatchable' film is a contradiction that earns curiosity exactly because it refuses the feed's currency. The Kancil Awards 2022 jury recognised the craft with a Merit in Music & Sound Design on Digital Experiences.
What it achieved
A film your ears watch when you can't visit
Why it worked
The constraint — diners locked out — became the concept: a film you listen to precisely because you cannot visit
Imagining a flame-grill is more appetite-inducing than watching one; absence is the craving multiplier
The name 'Unwatchable' packages the medium inversion as a joke, giving a zero-visual asset a visual-feed hook
Sound is already half of Nando's in-restaurant identity — sizzle, music, bustle — so the medium stayed brand-true rather than gimmicky
What can be applied
When a channel to your customer closes, don't emulate the old format through a new pipe — invert the format so the limitation itself becomes the idea and the hook.
Aftermath
The film took a Merit at the Kancil Awards 2022 in Music & Sound Design on Digital Experiences for Fishermen Integrated, the agency that had won Malaysia's Golden Kancil in 2015 and 2019 and whose run of pandemic-era work put five projects into the YouTubeWorks Malaysia 2021 finalist list. Audio-first brand experiences stayed a niche in Malaysian marketing, which is part of why the piece stood out: it remains the country's clearest example of a brand film with nothing to watch.
