The solution
In early 2020, before the pandemic reshaped the news cycle, the loudest object in food advertising was a decaying burger. Burger King's 'Mouldy Whopper' debuted on 19 February with a 34-day timelapse of its signature sandwich rotting on a counter — the point being that it contained no artificial preservatives. The campaign drew huge attention and debate: visceral 'gross' reactions pulled purchase-desire scores below fast-food norms, yet attention ran 10 percent above benchmark and the preservative message registered as the ad's best feature.
Nando's Malaysia, watching a rival own the conversation with a spend it could never approach, asked a trendjack question in its Kancil entry brief: could it capitalise on the burger hype for its PERi-PERi Chicken Burger on a microscopic budget? The agency Fishermen Integrated realised the answer hid in the premise. Nando's burger is also preservative-free — but it would never grow mould, because customers eat it too quickly.
The response was one social post: no burger at all, just a few leftover crumbs. Every viewer who knew the Whopper spot supplied the missing comparison themselves, and Nando's got the tastiness claim across by implication. The Kancil Awards 2022 jury gave the work a Merit for best use of social and messaging platforms.
What it achieved
Our burger can't mould — it's eaten too fast
Why it worked
Trendjacking works only with speed and an angle; inverting the premise delivered both without media weight
The claim 'too tasty to remain uneaten' is shown, not asserted — the crumbs make the viewer complete the argument
Riding a globally famous campaign meant every person who got the joke had also seen the original, so zero reach was needed for the reference to land
Humour softened the category tension: Nando's mocked the format, not the rival, so the reply read as wit rather than attack
What can be applied
A trend is an invitation to answer, not to imitate. Small budgets win by flipping the premise of the moment — use the other brand's campaign as the setup line and let one image deliver the punchline.
Aftermath
The crumbs post ran as a single social execution in 2020, while Burger King's original went on to become one of the most-discussed ads of the year. Fishermen Integrated — twice winner of Malaysia's Golden Kancil — took a Merit at the Kancil Awards 2022 for the work, part of a run that also put five of its projects into the YouTubeWorks Malaysia 2021 finalist list. The piece is a standing Malaysian example of answering big-budget advertising with structural wit instead of spend.
