The Methane Pioneer sailed LNG across the Atlantic in 1959 and opened the gas trade

Natural gas is cheap and abundant, but in the 1950s it could only move by pipeline — and pipelines stop at the ocean. To sell gas across the sea you had to liquefy it at about -160°C, shrink it into a liquid, and keep it cold in a ship's tank.
In 1959 the Methane Pioneer, a converted World War II Liberty freighter owned by Comstock Liquid Methane Corporation, sailed from the Trunkline terminal at Lake Charles, Louisiana, to the British Gas facility at Canvey Island, England. The 27-day crossing carried about 5,000 m³ of LNG in five aluminium tanks insulated with balsa and glass fibre.
Until then nobody could be sure the insulation systems would hold over a long ocean voyage. The safe arrival conclusively demonstrated that large quantities of liquefied natural gas could be transported internationally — and marked the start of the LNG era.
Commercial service followed quickly: the first purpose-built methane carriers, Methane Progress and Methane Princess, each carrying 27,400 m³, entered service in 1964 on the Algeria–Canvey Island trade.

If the product cannot travel, change its state instead of building the entire route; one successful proof voyage can open an industry nobody would finance on paper.
what came after
The Methane Pioneer proved the concept; from 1964 Algeria began regular LNG deliveries to Britain, and LNG shipping grew into a global industry carrying hundreds of millions of tonnes a year. Tank designs evolved — from balsa-insulated aluminium to spherical Moss and membrane systems — while modern carriers grew to the 266,000 m³ Q-Max class.
