Merry-go-round trains unload coal while moving, so power stations never stop

British Rail and the power industry ran dedicated coal trains in continuous loops: bottom-discharge wagons unload on the move, no shunting, no stopping.

The solution

Coal-fired power stations needed a continuous, predictable fuel supply, but conventional wagonload trains had to be shunted, braked and unloaded wagon by wagon — slow, labor-heavy and congested at the plant.

The merry-go-round system redesigned the whole cycle: dedicated trains run as continuously coupled units between colliery and power station, passing through a loop at the plant. Specially built hopper wagons release coal from the bottom while the train moves at very low speed over discharge bays, then head back without shunting.

New CEGB stations such as Fiddler's Ferry were built around the concept, with automatic discharge facilities at the heart of the site. The same hopper-wagon approach later carried aggregates, cement and other bulk flows.

What can be applied

Remove the stop: when loading and unloading time is the constraint, design the asset to move through the work instead of parking at it — the same loop returns the empty fleet.

Aftermath

MGR became the standard way British power stations received coal through the 1970s and 1980s, outliving the coal era; the Fiddler's Ferry loop closed with the station in 2020.
