Mega MGC Coffee's 2,000-won Americano outruns Starbucks by selling beans, not seats
Mega Coffee sells 2,000-won Americanos via 3,500 mostly franchised stores and earns its margin supplying beans, syrup and equipment to franchisees.

the move
Korea's coffee market looked saturated, but Mega MGC Coffee turned cheap Americanos into the country's most-used franchise cafe brand. A 2026 survey of 2,000 consumers put Mega's monthly usage at 71% versus Starbucks' 69.2%, and its 31.9% 'most-visited brand' share beat Starbucks' 26.1%.
The model is franchise-first: fewer than 20 of 3,500 stores are company-owned. Ann House, the parent, earns from supplying franchisees with equipment, beans and syrup at a markup, plus fees, training and royalties. Product sales to stores surged 34% to 467.2 billion won in 2024 while the cost of those goods rose only 62.6 billion won, so each additional store compounded profit.
Financially, 2024 sales reached 495.9 billion won (up 34.6%) with operating profit of 107.6 billion won (up 55.2%) — a 21.7% margin versus Starbucks Korea's 6.2%. Store count grew from 1,603 in 2021 to about 3,500 by early 2025, and average monthly visits per customer hit 7.02, the highest among major brands.
why it works
- A 2,000-won price pulls volume while franchisees carry store-level capital risk.
- Ingredient and equipment markups scale automatically with the store network.
- Low fixed costs make expansion profitable even at slim per-cup economics.
- Delivery and loyalty habits keep low-price brands ahead of premium rivals.
what transfers
In a price war, the winner can be the one who monetizes the supply chain, not the cup: a low consumer price drives store growth, and each new store adds a recurring buyer of your inputs.
what came after
Mega raised its hot Americano to about 1,700 won in April 2025 citing bean prices and a weak won, yet kept leading usage surveys. The broader low-price coffee segment kept growing, with Compose Coffee also gaining share, and delivery orders increasingly going to budget brands.
